AN animal crazy Stourport 11-year-old turned keeper for the day when she joined staff at Dudley Zoological Gardens (DZG).

Jasmine Thomas, of Beach Road, worked with rare lemurs and giraffes at the West Midlands tourist attraction as part of the 40-acre site’s Little Zoo Keeper experience.

Jasmine, who was treated to the special day for her birthday, said: “I worked with keepers and helped clean and feed the animals. I had a brilliant day and I really enjoyed it.”

Peter Suddock, DZG chief executive, said: “Jasmine had a fantastic time. We introduced the Keeper for a Day for adults a few years ago and then brought in the Little Zoo Keeper days for children. They have proved so successful that staff are fully booked for months ahead with requests from all over the country.”

Little Zoo Keepers discover what goes on behind the scenes at DZG. They help staff with their daily duties including feeding, cleaning and caring for the collection – many of which are endangered species.

Later, there’s a chance to catch up with the action in Lemur Wood and Wallaby Walkthrough before finding out more about DZG’s larger animals, including tapirs and giraffes. Other sections covered include Sumatran tigers, Asiatic lions, red pandas and reptiles.

Mr Suddock added: “Not only is it a unique day to remember, working alongside some of the rarest animals in the world, but funds raised through the scheme support exciting conservation and animal projects at DZG.

“It also offers a brilliant photo opportunity for the family album and makes a great gift for all occasions.”
