A STOURPORT woman is running in the Dublin Marathon in memory of her late father-in-law, who was a popular landlord of a Kidderminster pub.

Carole Jones, 37, of Moorhall Lane, will take part in the event, on Monday, October 25 and will be raising funds for Kemp Hospice.

She said it would be her third and final marathon after having previously taken part in the London Marathon in 2005 and the Dublin Marathon for the first time in 2007.

Mrs Jones, a teaching assistant at King Charles I School in Kidderminster, explained that Kemp Hospice was a charity close to her heart.

She said her mother died from cancer in 2007 and the hospice had provided vital support to both her mother and father at the time.

She added, hoeever, she was also running to "celebrate" her late father-in-law, Roy Jones who, until his death on November 11, 2009, was the landlord of The Railway Train in Offmore Road, Kidderminster.

She explained Mr Jones had lost his wife to cancer in 1999 and over a period of about 10 years he and his customers at the pub raised about £20,000 for Kemp Hospice.

Mrs Jones, who has two daughters, said: “I knew Roy for over 20 years and he was incredibly kind-hearted. He and his late wife, Sue, treated me like one of their own.

“I shall always have a lot to thank Roy for and so this is my tribute. While, obviously, the amount I raise is going to be tiny in comparison to the amount raised by Roy, it's still giving something to a cause which means a lot to us both.”

She added: “My husband, Simon, has lost the man he idolised, and - like his brothers - Roy's death has hit him very hard.

“He will be coming to Dublin with me, so I hope this gives him something to smile about and makes him proud.”
