A STUDENT from Stourport will tackle a seven-and-a-half-mile run and muddy assault course to raise money to teach children in Fiji, during her gap year.

Hayley Rathbone, 20, will take part in the Beastly Feast 2010, a multi-terrain run, including a mud and water assault course, at Top Barn, in Worcester on Sunday.

She is hoping to raise money to teach underprivileged children, on Ovalau Island, between January and September, next year.

The former Hagley Catholic High School student will volunteer at Taviya District School and will live with a teacher and their family.

She said: “It will be basic living with electricity from a generator for a few hours some nights. I will help to teach the children English, science and other subjects and can start up extra-curricular activites like sports clubs.”

She added: “I am very excited about what lies ahead for me and look forward to teaching all the children, experiencing a whole new culture and learning a new language.”

Miss Rathbone, is working at Sainsbury’s in Kidderminster, to save up for her trip and is applying to universities for her return.

She said: “I am certain my future gap year plans will enable me to become a more independent and open-minded person and allow me to learn skills which will prepare me for university life.”

She runs as a hobby but has been training for the challenge for three months.

She added: “I have never taken part in a run like this before. I hope to raise lots of money to help pay for my volunteering placement in Fiji. If people could sponsor me, even if it is just a small amount I would be very grateful.”
