THE children of two postmen, who worked in Kidderminster in the 1930s, were united thanks to a calendar of pictures of the town’s past.

Graham Cooke, 64, recognised his father Cyril in a photograph of the staff of Kidderminster Post Office in 1935, on the front of the Wyre Forest Historical Research Group’s 2011 calendar.

He contacted the club’s chairman, Gay Hill and visited the group’s exhibition, which was held at Kidderminster Library throughout December.

Named in the calendar’s text was Syd Insull, the father of Pauline Carroll, a member of the historical research group and Ms Hill arranged for the pair to meet.

They found their fathers had both been awarded the Imperial Service Medal and went on to work in Brinton’s internal post office.

Ms Hill said: “I had been scrolling through some newspapers on microfilm and had just come across a report of Cyril Cooke receiving his medal in the Kidderminster Times so I was able to surprise Graham with it.”

Mr Cooke, who has lived in Kidderminster all his life, said: “It was marvellous as I had not seen that article before.”

Mrs Carroll, 71 of Stourport, said: “It was fantastic. We were able to recognise and talk about other people in the photo.”

A number of residents have contacted the club, giving information about people pictured in the photographs.

The latest calendar can still be purchased at Kidderminster Library throughout January.
