AROUND 1,600 women have signed up to take part in Kidderminster’s first Race for Life event this weekend - little more than half the number it was hoped would enter.

Tesco and Cancer Research UK wanted 3,000 women to walk, jog or run 5k in Sunday’s event at Brinton Park to hit a fund-raising target of £208,320.

Katherine Culshaw, Race for Life event manager for Kidderminster, said they might have been a “bit ambitious” with the entry target.

She explained: “It’s a brand new event and it’s the first time we have had the event in Kidderminster. It’s really hard to tell how many people it’s going to attract.

“Sixteen hundred people is really, really good. Obviously the more people that take part the more sponsorship will be raised.

“If we can still raise £208,320 we will be happy.”

She added: ““Race for Life at Brinton Park will be a unique celebration of sisterhood and pride. The atmosphere will be amazing, with local women from all walks of life coming together to make a positive difference to people affected by cancer.”
