A YOUNG boy who died after falling into a canal basin in Stourport fell 20 feet into the water.

The lock had to be drained of water to allow emergency services to find and retrieve the boy, following the incident at noon.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance, rapid response vehicle and two air ambulances from bases in Cosford and Strensham to the scene.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "West Midlands Ambulance Service responded to reports that a child had fallen 20 foot into a canal lock.

“The lock had to be drained of water to enable ambulance crews and other emergency services to locate and retrieve the child.

“Ambulance crews and medics on board the air ambulance commenced advanced life support treatment after the casualty had been brought to the canal bank.”

The boy was airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The aircrew continued treatment during the flight and the hospital was alerted to the condition of the patient. The boy was pronounced dead at about 1.45pm.
