SEVERN Valley Railway, an Abberley hotel and log cabins in Callow hill scooped the top spot at an award which recognises businesses that make staying in Worcestershire special.

The railway steamed ahead in the Worcestershire Welcome Awards and was the winner of the outstanding customer service category. It was also highly commended in the visitor attraction of the year section.

The Elms Hotel and Spa, in Abberley took first place for hotel of the year, while the Forest View Retreat, in Callow Hill won self-catering holiday of the year.

The businesses all scooped a plaque and have been fast-tracked to the relevant category of Visit England’s national awards.

People voted online, by post and text for their favourites and the awards, which was in its third year, received more votes than ever.

Judges visited the shortlisted businesses and looked at their use of local produce, potential to increase tourism in the area and their knowledge of the local area, before deciding the winners.

Simon Tipple, of Destination Worcestershire, said: "The Worcestershire Welcome Awards highlight the strong offer we have in the county with nominations for each category put forward by visitors themselves.

“Our congratulations go out to all winners and short listed entries and we wish them well representing the region in the national tourism awards later this year."
