A FENCE on a large heath near Stourport was cut in several places causing £1,500 of damage.

Around 100 metres of posts, wire and information panels on Hartlebury Common were targeted in the incident, which happened just after 11am yesterday.

The wire fencing - which stops cattle grazing on the land straying onto nearby roads - is owned by Worcestershire County Council.

Andy Maginnis, Countryside Manager said: "I am shocked at this irresponsible act of criminal damage. We are offering the police our full cooperation."

A man in his 50s was arrested yesterday on suspicion of criminal damage in connection with the incident and was later released on bail.

PC Paul Cound from Droitwich police station said, "This incident could have been a lot worse. Had the cattle escaped onto the road, drivers and the animals could have been put in danger.

"There have been a number of similar crimes on Hartlebury Common recently, and we urge anyone with information about this incident - or previous ones - to get in touch."

Witnesses can call PC Cound on 0300 333 3000 quoting log 201-S-061011 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
