CASH raised in memory of a Stourport man will go to help Wyre Forest youngsters pursue their sporting dreams.

Dennis Knott, who played an active role in youth football in the district, died in August, aged 76, and his family asked mourners to donate to the Ray Mercer Sporting Foundation in lieu of flowers at his funeral.

The gesture raised £375 for the foundation set up by the Shuttle/Times & News to give a helping hand to Wyre Forest's most talented young sportsmen and women.

Mr Knott, the retired head of security at Kidderminster carpet firm Brintons, was a founder member of the Stourport Under-14 Boys Football League in the 1970s when Ray Mercer was an official.

Mr Knott also set up Burlish Olympic youth team and as season ticket holders at Kidderminster Harriers, he and his wife Suzanne got to know Mr Mercer, who was the long-serving secretary of the Aggborough club.
