KIDDERMINSTER'S Amy Smith produced another fine display but just missed out on her first ever Olympic individual final this evening.

The Wyre Forest Swimming Club member set an impressive time of 24.87 seconds as she came sixth in the first semi-final in the 50m freestyle.

The first race was by far the quickest and Smith was agonisingly denied a final spot because she was ninth fastest.

Afterwards, she'd said: "I don't know what is it about the 50m freestyle but it doesn't seem to like me very much.

"It was a good time, it was similar to what I did in the morning so I can't really complain because I did my best."

Earlier in the 50m freestyle, she showed good form and tremendous mental toughness to progress.

In the qualifying heat she set a time of 25.28, her third ever fastest in the discipline, which left her place in the semi-finals in doubt as she and two other athletes were joint 16th on same time.

But she dug deep to win the three-way swim-off to win with 24.82, which was just two hundreds of a second off her personal best.

Smith's involvement in the Games continued as she set a new PB to help GB power into the final of the 4x100m medley this morning.

Racing in the 100m freestyle leg, she set a time of 53.69 to anchor the ladies home.

Smith, Gemma Spofforth, Siobahn-Marie O'Connor and Jemma Lowe set a time of 3:59.37 and will be aiming to go even quicker at 8.07pm on Saturday.
