A YOUNG person is seriously injured in a UK workplace every 40 minutes and 66 under-19s have been killed at work in the last 10 years.

As part of its ongoing campaign to educate young people about the risks they might face in the workplace, the British Safety Council is launching a national video competition for schools, designed to encourage students to understand the possible dangers through a learning experience.

Open to all secondary school students, the competition requires students to produce a two-minute video about the dangers facing young people in the workplace and the message they would like to get across to employers about the issue.

Entries can be from individual students or from groups of up to six students.

The videos will be judged by the British Safety Council and the judges will be looking for clarity of message, impact of the message to employers, as well as overall creative presentation.

The top three entrants and their teachers will be invited to a prestigious lunchtime event in London on December 4 to showcase their films and receive their prizes.

Winning entries will receive a digital camera for each student involved, as well as £50 worth of HMV vouchers and a digital camcorder for the school.

Two runners-up will receive a digital camera for each student, £25 of HMV vouchers and a digital camcorder for the school. Five highly commended entries will receive £25 of HMV vouchers for each student.

Entries must be received by 5pm on Friday, November 6. To enter the competition, contact the British Safety Council, on 0208 600 1034 or visit www.britsafe.org/schools
