The letter from Doug Hine of the Green Party is very important.

(Shuttle Letters Page 12th March) I agree with virtually everything he says.

Unfortunately, he does not set out at all how the “peaceful revolution currently gripping British politics”

will lead to any genuine change.

A worldwide crisis is approaching because capitalism is impoverishing many and enriching a few to an incredible degree.

It is approaching also because it is becoming too late to prevent catastrophic climate change by gradual measures.

I am a member of the Socialist Party and will stand in the local election in May, but I am not standing for my party. I am standing for TUSC, the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition. TUSC will be standing over 100 parliamentary candidates and about 1000 council candidates across the country.

As far as I know socialism remains the only alternative to capitalism.

The changes Doug looks forward to can come about only if we builds a society where wealth is used for the common good not private profit.

That is what TUSC stands for.

Doug will know that Green Party councillors in power have supported cuts budgets in places like Brighton and Bristol.

TUSC is an attempt to build a new party and it has been joined by councillors from places such as Leicester, Hull and Southampton who are not prepared to carry through cuts proposed by their parties.

TUSC has approached the Green Party and Richard Taylor’s NHS party about joining the coalition. So far I believe there has been no response.

I have been personally involved with many campaigns in recent years to save Kidderminster’s remaining historic buildings.

I am now leading a campaign to prevent the widespread bullying of NHS staff.

But I know that the underlying problem with all this is lack of money available for public purposes.

Instead, the huge accumulating sums of money available to private investors will go to China or wherever private profit is greatest.

Places like Wyre Forest will never again see investment in jobs on a large scale unless capitalism is abandoned and local economies are rebuilt to provide local people with jobs and services and to create a low carbon economy.

I know that some members of all parties share these concerns. I urge them to consider joining a new coalition capable of planning the change that is needed.
