I agree with Natalie McVey of the Green Party that Proportional Representation would make our voting system more fair.

However, we will all still be living in a capitalist state rather than a democracy if none of the main parties offers voters an alternative to capitalism.

We badly need a party which stands for an economy based on the principle of public need rather than private profit.

The Green Party had a long list of excellent policies at the recent election, and they deserved far more support than they received. But ultimately they remain unconvincing because they do not tackle capitalism itself.

Nobody runs capitalism better than the Conservative party.

How will the Green Party fund their policies in the face of the inevitable adverse reaction from big business?

All of us who realise that capitalism is now taking us down a dead end need to come together to form a new mass party offering a convincing economic alternative. This will recognise, for example, that the NHS and our state schools are not a luxury dependent upon the private sector, but are a vital part of a vigorous economy, far more so than the provision of coffee houses on every street corner.

It will recognise also that we cannot go on transporting manufactured goods hither and thither across the globe with no heed for the consequences of global warming.

Manufacturing must be planned so that communities like Wyre Forest have a sustainable local economy.

Two companies have recently decided to base themselves in Wyre Forest.

This is to be welcomed, but it is far from clear that this is a sign that all will be well. We cannot trust the apparently encouraging employment figures in Wyre Forest because we do not know how many people have been forced off benefits, or how many jobs are zero-hour contracts or part-time and paid at the minimum wage.

Worse still, Wyre Forest will lose a great many public sector jobs in the next five years as the government embarks upon further cuts of £12bn.

Tony Blair would not use the word “socialism”. I can think of no better recommendation for it. Time is running out and the need is urgent.

Those of us who want a society based on public need not private profit must come together.
