I RECENTLY read a foreward to a local book titled Butterflies of Bewdley. The part that was of interest to me went as follows: During the Year of the Environment 1987 to celebrate the opening of the long-awaited bypass that should bring to the attractive and beautifully situated historic river port of Bewdley, respite from the heavy traffic that has disturbed its tranquillity for so many years.' Respite? Two decades on our historic port is congested with traffic.

I challenge our local councillors to address the problem but it scares me to read what is really being pushed for by them.

Plans for a new footbridge in Bewdley are forging ahead'. This statement was after town councillors had sent out thousands of survey forms' But with a return of only 132 forms and only 88 of these giving a positive reaction, how can the council conclude that they have positive response? How dare they forge ahead.

We don't want another bridge!

We need respite!

The by-pass bridge is just not doing its job! Make it work.

I challenge the councillors to ask residents for innovative ideas pointed at making the existing available solution work. It's been there since 1987.

Maybe council could create a central point for suggestions to be put on display.

Maybe a wall in Bewdley Museum could be made available.

Maybe suggestions could be asked for written on A4, numbered and voted on.

Maybe the best three could be professionally vetted and again voted on.

Maybe the winner would have the answer.

Maybe!
