RESIDENTS can boost their job prospects, learn how to make jewellery and find out how to sew as part of a range of new year activity sessions to be held in Stourport.
Visitors to Stourport Library, based at County Buildings in Worcester Street, who are currently out of work or looking for a change of career can take part in a course designed to help them develop the skills needed to work in customer services.
The sessions run from Monday, January 13, until Monday, April 7, at the library. Participants will develop key skills and knowledge over the duration of the course to help them fill any skills gaps required to help them gain work. Library manager, Maureen Hobbs, said the course would also help businesses in the area recruit a skilled workforce.
She added: "Libraries have a vital role to play in helping people during these tough economic times and this course aims to support people by helping them develop key skills employers are looking for."
Library-goers can also take part in some new year fun with a one-day creative jewellery making session, which takes place on Tuesday, January 14, from 10am until 2.30pm.
The workshop will introduce attendees to some basic skills and materials to create their own designs.
Mrs Hobbs added: "This is a chance to try something new, whether you are making jewellery for yourself or someone else, it is also a chance to make new friends and learn new skills as well as being creative."
Visitors will also be able to acquire new and useful skills at a beginners sewing course, designed to help those with little or no experience in making garments. Basic techniques will be covered and participants can make an adaptable skirt for an adult or child.
The course will run weekly at the library from Friday, January 17, until February 14, between 9.30am and 11.30am.
Mrs Hobbs said: "Following the bust festive seasons, there is a chance for people to try something new with this useful session. This is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and learn new skills as well as being creative."
