CHESS lovers in Bewdley are gearing up for an annual charity tournament in the town this weekend.

The 2016 Bewdley Chess Tournament will be held on Sunday, August 28 at Wribbenhall Parish Rooms from 10.45am to 4.30pm.

Each player will have six games during the course of the contest and entry is £4 or £2 for under-17s which is payable on the day.

Organisers are aiming to promote the game and encourage more uptake as well as raising money for the repair of the roof at St Anne’s Church. They have been supported by businesses in the town who have donated prizes.

The Mayor of Bewdley John Beeson will present trophies including the Mayor’s Shield for the highest-scoring Bewdley player.

The Jim Friar Trophy will be given to the highest-scoring junior and is named after the popular local chess coach and tutor, who passed away in May.
