A PROJECT has been launched in Cookley with the help of a Comic Relief grant to get children involved in different sports.

KDsports has been set up using a £5,000 grant to increase sporting opportunities in tennis, athletics, archery and cycling in Wyre Forest.

The project, led by Andrea Holmes, director of a community interest company Connecting Neighbourhoods, aims to see if London 2012 left a legacy for children in Wyre Forest.

She said: “This project started when my son Kian, 10, wanted to learn web design. I told him I’d teach him if we had a purpose.

“We put in a quick bid to Comic Relief about getting children interested in different sports and we got the funding a week before the summer holidays.”

Kian made a video and posted it online asking other children to vote in a poll as to which sports they would like to try.

Tennis, archery, cycling and athletics were chosen as they are all sports not widely available in Cookley.

The project has already hosted some tennis classes and plans to start archery sessions soon.

There is also a media aspect to the project where children will be able to learn about sports reporting and how to conduct a good interview.

KDsports also hopes to host an after-school club from September and children will also be seeking sponsorship so the project can keep going after the £5,000 is spent.
