STOURPORT town councillors have criticised Worcestershire County Council’s Highways department for planning to spend money on an “unnecessary” sign.

The department has proposed to ban traffic from turning left in the ahead lane at the junction of Vale Road and Worcester Street. The current road layout at the junction has a left turn slip lane for drivers wanting to make the manoeuvre.

Signage is also planned to be placed at the junction to help “prevent possible conflicts with the pedestrian phase across Worcester Street”.

The proposal was put to town councillors for recommendation at their monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 4.

Conservative councillor David Little said: “I have never seen anyone turn left there in my whole time of living here, so why is money being spent on this.

“This is money that your county council want to spend on a sign that is quite unnecessary.”

Mayor of Stourport, Independent Community and Health Concern councillor Cliff Brewer, said: “I didn’t even know you could do that, so it all seems quite bizarre.” The town council agreed unanimously their response should be to not only reject the proposal, but note it as unnecessary.
