THE regeneration of Stourport Canal Basins will begin with the demolition of the former Lloyd’s Garage site in Bridge Street.
Demolition of the garage, planned to start next Monday, will open up Stourport town centre to create views and pedestrian access from Bridge Street through to the canal basin area.
Conservative councillor John Campion, Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member for planning and economic regeneration, said: “This site represents a major regeneration opportunity in the town.
“The basins have been a hidden jewel, so we are delighted to be able to reveal them for local people and visitors.
“Prospective investors will be able to easily visualise the commercial opportunity that the basins provide.”
Independent councillor Helen Dyke, town centre champion, said: “The economic climate over the last few years has made bringing forward regeneration plans particularly difficult.
“Opening up the Bridge Street basins link will show how a mixed use commercial, retail and residential development would greatly enhance the town.”
During the process of developing the canal basins, the site will provide a temporary car park for 34 spaces in the centre of the town.
Mr Campion said: “We are working hard with our partners, the Homes and Communities Agency and Canal and River Trust, to progress the Bridge Street basins redevelopment.
“In the meantime, it is felt that a temporary car park would make good use of the site and support the vibrant summer visitor season.”
