THE PE staff are very proud of the year seven and nine girls’ rounders teams who showed determination and enthusiasm in the rounders league. The girls organised their own practise sessions dand ran their teams effectively, demonstrating a brilliant grasp of tactics that enabled them to beat other Wyre Forest Schools. The year seven team came second in their league, only losing one game. The year nine team won their grand slam league undefeated.

Sport Relief day fell on March 23 and the sports captains spent hours designing and planning a very successful celebration. The first event took place at 9.55am when, after a shortened tutor period, all the students came out onto the field to complete a one mile conga.

Many pupils were dressed for the occasion and there were some very strange outfits, including the men from the 118 TV advert and a few seriously creepy Morphs! At lunch time there was a barbecue staffed by the Lodge students, a cake sale in the Hub and wristbands designed by the sports captains for sale. More than £1,000 was raised.

That afternoon, the sports captains visited local primary schools to encourage the children to take part in their own Sport Relief event: running a mile. To provide further inspiration, the captains carried a replica Olympic torch which they handed on to the children. Our energetic sports captains ended up running over eight miles.

Selected boys from years seven and eight had the privilege of being coached by a professional footballer. Wayne Hatswell, who has played for Kidderminster Harriers FC, agreed to coach the lads over a four week period, helping them to develop their footballing skills. Mr Patterson was pleased with the results. “As well as helping them develop their skills, this experience with Wayne has enabled them to become more self-confident on the pitch,” he remarked. Around 1,200 children from years three to 13 from 49 schools across Worcester-shire came together to take part in a day of sport at the inaugural Worcestershire School Games. The event, which took place at Bromsgrove School on June 19, used the spirit of the Olympics and Paralympics to inspire young people to be the best they can be. The children — ranging in ages from seven to 18 — went head-to-head in their own mini-Olympics, battling it out for the title of Worcestershire School Games champion in 14 different sports. The School Games were supported by 350 young leaders, who had received training to help run the event in a range of roles including team leaders, event support and an on-site media team who took video footage of the day and interviewed participants.

Another successful sporting event was this year’s district athletics. Twenty pupils attended trials at Stourport High School and 11 pupils qualified for the district athletics finals held at Nunnery Wood School. The event took place during one of the heaviest downfalls of rain this year and many athletes had to hand in their best times/distances. Special mention must be made to Aran Hartland and Liam Carter who made it through to the national finals, representing Worcestershire in the javelin. Well done to all those students who represented the school and made it the most successful district representation that Wolverley CE Secondary School has ever achieved.

Given that June 2012 was the wettest month on record, we were extremely lucky that sports day wasn’t a washout this year. It was cold and windy but at least the rain held off. The field events had taken place earlier, on June 20, and Knight House held first place in the running total, putting them in a strong position for the track events on sports day. The whole school turned out to support their house, cheering the runners and encouraging them to run faster.

Knight House were the overall winners, to Mr Patterson’s great delight as he could be heard shouting “Well done the Mighty Knight”! This year’s Victor Ludorum, awarded for sportsmanship and sporting prowess, was given to Kennedy Digie, Eilidh Shakespeare, Caelen Gower and Rhys Pugh, all of whom have demonstrated outstanding ability and sportsmanship and whose commitment and motivation throughout the year have been an inspiration to the whole school.

While the rest of the school ground gratefully to a halt on the last day of term, and staff sauntered off, looking forward to a holiday, the sports department was preparing itself for an extra week of strenuous activity. Miss Hodgetts organised and ran a summer activity week for our year nine students and invited years five and six pupils from our feeder schools to take part as well. More than 20 students turned up, all eager to take part in den building, football, basketball, dodgeball, table tennis, a scavenger hunt and tennis. On the last day, Miss Hodgetts piled them into the mini buses and they took Stourport by storm! Star of the week was Imogen White for being lovely and helpful.
