A VOLUNTEER from a group set up to maintain and renovate Drakelow Tunnels says he is “more surprised than anyone” after police discovered a cannabis farm at the site.

The man, who did not want to be named, said reading The Shuttle’s online breaking news report yesterday was the first he had heard about the incident.

He said volunteers had been looking to renovate the historic Wolverley tunnels and were supporting a bid to turn the site into a museum and cafe.

He told The Shuttle: “We had no idea about this. The tunnels are used by paranormal investigation groups who have access to the whole complex and nothing has ever been reported to us.

“It is amazing to us because we have groups go in there every Friday and Saturday and nothing has been reported. We have invited several media groups to come down and have shown them all the way around.

“If something was going on someone must have seen something. We are totally surprised and we do not know what is happening. We have not seen or heard anything and the online Shuttle report was the first thing we’d seen or heard of this.

“We are more surprised about this than anyone.”

The unnamed volunteer group is helping to restore the former Second World War aero engine factory site in Wolverley.

After coming up with the idea of creating a museum and visitor centre, they liased with the site’s owners Quercus Ilex SA on the proposals which have now been put forward to Wyre Forest District Council.
