THE popular splashpad in Worcester's Gheluvelt Park will be open everyday for the rest of this month after families expressed their disappointment at not being able to enjoy the feature in the warm weather.

Your Worcester News reported today that people were travelling to the park, during the Easter holidays and sunny weather, but finding it closed during the week.

And families took to the Worcester News Facebook page to complain about the closure of the popular equipment.

Worcester City Council, which is responsible for the splashpad, said they advertised the area as only being open on weekends and that opening it full time was not as simple as "flicking on a switch" because trained staff had to be on site during the time the fountains were operating.

But today after a u-turn the council announced the splashpad would be open everyday, between 11am and 4pm, for the rest of the month.

David Sutton, service manager for a cleaner and greener city, said: “We’re pleased to announce that the popular Splashpad in Gheluvelt Park will be open tomorrow (Friday, April 10) from 11am to 4pm, and will then be open at the same times for every day for the rest of April.

“The Splashpad is usually only open at weekends in April, but the unseasonably warm weather has created strong customer demand so we’re delighted to have found a way to increase the number of days it’s available.

“We’ve recently finished installing new automatic sensors that mean the Splashpad only operates when activated by visitors standing on the activation pads during opening hours. This means we will not be wasting energy on colder days when no one is using the splashpad. We therefore intend to open it seven days a week from this weekend onwards, with longer opening hours from May 1.”
