RUNNERS will put their best feet forward to raise money to help victims of rape and sexual abuse.

A team from West Mercia Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre are gearing up to take part in the City of Birmingham 5K Run on Sunday.

The centre provides support to survivors of rape and sexual abuse and their families and have so far raised £1,075 to support its pilot counselling service for children, which will coincide with the launch of a counselling service for men on October 5.

The centre has previously only been able to provide a free counselling service for women due to lack of funds, although men and children could find support on the centre's helpline.

The centre's chief executive officer, Jocelyn Anderson, said: "We believe people should be able to access the support they need, when they need it for as long as they need it, regardless of gender or age.  This funding will support the launch of our new pilot counselling services to men and children (aged 11 and over). We will continue to pursue sustainable funding sources to ensure we can provide a service for all."

Kerrie Best, a counsellor and project manager at WMRSASC, whose idea it was to do the run said: ’’ None of us are speedy runners, just a group of people who are willing to dust off their not over-used trainers and have a go. Sponsors support is very much appreciated.’’
