A FORMER Wyre Forest teacher and his beloved wife are celebrating after clocking up 60 happily married years together.

David and Margaret Serrell were married at St John’s Church in Kidderminster on Saturday, May 25 1957, two years after the teenage sweethearts first set eyes on each other.

They met at a local dance at the former swimming baths in Castle Road, Kidderminster in 1955 and got engaged while on holiday in Blackpool in 1956.

David was 21 and Margaret was 19 when they were married the following year.

David who was from Hartlebury, worked at SDF Drop Forgings before being married, and after completing his national service in Singapore in 1959 where he his passion for teaching was ignited.

After completing a teaching certificate in Woodwork and Metalwork at Saltley College Birmingham, he taught at Park Boys School Dudley, Harry Cheshire High School Kidderminster and Stourport High School, before retiring in 1989.

Margaret, who was born in Hoo Road Kidderminster, spent most of her working life as a table setter at Tomkinsons and at Bond Worths Stourport before retiring in 1996

They have two Children Mark and Janet and spent most of the married life in Prospect Road, Stourport, before moving to Kidderminster in 2003.

They put the success of their marriage down to a “give and take attitude”.
