Can man's best friend, the dog, really make a difference to the care of people suffering with Dementia? The latest research and a fantastic, new Dementia Dog Project, has certainly proved the answer is yes!
The Dementia Dog Project started life at the Glasgow School of Art bringing together a collaboration between the University, Alzheimer Scotland and Dogs for the Disabled. The network have been able to connect the team's expertise in dementia care in humans and the provision of trained assistance dogs to help patients in order to build the foundations of success.
This inspirational project aims to build up services for those people suffering from dementia, much like the guide dogs for the blind, in order to support them in their lives, providing assistance in the home and perhaps crucially a lifelong canine friend! The project will train a range of dogs to help those people coping with dementia to maintain their waking, sleeping and eating routines, promoting their wellbeing and mental stability. In addition the dogs are being trained to remind sufferers to take their medication.
This fantastic project showcases the intelligence of the canine and allows people which may have become isolated to keep active and engaged in their local community alongside providing a consistent loving companion. We at Scientific Nutritional Products thinks this is fantastic news for those people suffering from dementia. For more information about the scheme why not visit their website www.dementiadog.org?
