Joy for twins and Samurai at nationals

Kidderminster Shuttle: Sally Moon Sally Moon

WYRE Forest’s reputation as a judo strong hold was further enhanced as local fighters won a host of medals at the British Championships.

Kidderminster sisters Rachel and Sally Moon were in great form, while members of Samurai also excelled.

Sally was crowned British Champion in the junior under-78 kilogram section, while her twin sister earned a bronze in the under-70kg.

The pair, who train under the watchful eye of Bill Kelly at Wolverhampton Judo Club, retained their place on the GB Junior squad.

They also earned senior bronze in their respective weight categories.

Not to be out done, Samurai pair Nathan Gallacher and Darcie Hancocks earned junior silvers, while Ellie Arnull finished in an outstanding fifth place.

Gallacher was desperately unlucky in his final when he saw a strong throw cancelled after a video replay revealed he had made contact his opponent’s leg.

Hancocks, who won the British Championships in the younger age band last year, reached her final with ease but was was caught by a backwards throw.

Meanwhile, there was also an outstanding performance from Arnull, one of the players who moved to Samurai when Stourbridge Judo Club closed.

She astonished many people by winning three contests and finishing in fifth place. Toni Poulsom, another former Stourbridge player, also fought well. For Samurai details call 07761 122977 or go to
