WORCESTERSHIRE bowler Josh Tongue claimed his first wickets on his Ashes debut for England at Lord's.

The 25-year-old, called up to the squad for the second test to replace ex-Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen Ali, made the breakthrough with the final delivery before lunch to remove Australian opener Usman Khawaja.

Tongue then sent fellow opener David Warner's stumps tumbling with his second wicket.

The 25-year-old was brought into the attack in the 18th over of the morning session but was pulled a couple of times, including a six from Warner for his half-century, as he went for 24 runs in his opening three overs.

But with the final ball of the morning session, Tongue made the important breakthrough to remove Khawaja for 16 and register his first-ever Ashes wicket.

And Tongue went on to take the second wicket as he produced a brilliant delivery to send the dangerous Warner's stumps tumbling for 66.

But Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne went on the offensive and built a partnership that put the visitors in control.

A couple of decisions seemingly went against England but the Aussie pair were playing well and putting their side in a good position.

By tea, Australia had pushed the score out to 190-2, with Smith unbeaten on 43 and Labuschagne on 46 as part of an 86-run partnership.
