STOURPORT men pushed Conference West title contenders Team Bath Buccaneers all the way in Saturday’s 2-1 loss.

They were beaten by a late goal in Somerset.

They were trailing to Richard Bendry’s strike but captain Phil Lashford levelled the scores.

But Stourport missed out when Jame Kellock grabbed the winner for Bath from a penalty corner.

Defeat means that after the first two games of the season, Stourport are still waiting for their first win. So far they have drawn 1-1 with Havant and lost to Bath, First team regular Mark Moss, who stepped down as captain, said: “We felt we should have had four points from our first two games, which goes to show how high our expectations are.

“We’ve played a team relegated to our division in Havant and Team Bath, who are favourites to go up.”

Stourport take on Guildford at home on Saturday (11.45am start).

n Stourport ladies started in the Midlands Division One with a battling 1-1 draw against Solihull and Blossomfield.

Solihull had taken advantage of some poor defending to open the scoring early in the first half.

Sarah Cavendish fired the leveller home after being set up by newcomer Rene Johnson.

Stourport finished the stronger team, but failed to have any further impact on the scoreline against an experienced Solihull.

The seconds kicked off the Worcestershire League with a 2-1 loss at home to the University of Warwick's first team.

After going behind, keeper Sally Smith made a string of fine saves to keep the away side at bay.

Sarah Kay and Shelley Tromans combined to allow Caroline Sidell to equalise from a short corner.

Stourport saw Claudia Wells go close but Warwick grabbed a late winner.

The third team were too strong for Tenbury’s second string as they ran out 8-0 winners, thanks to goals for Rhiannon Linnington-Payne (5), Jen Peniket (2) and Kate Bailey.

n Kidderminster ladies lost 3-0 to Harborne.

They were only able to field 10 players and constantly found themselves on the back foot.

Rebecca Jackson was voted player of the match for her tireless effort in midfield.
