HEAD coach Dave Irish praised club captain Stuart Such for his impact on Kidderminster Carolians RFC this season.

Such has helped to guide the Marlpool Lane side to three wins in a row in league and cup at the start of the season .

He took the reins from Ben Turner, who stepped down this summer to concentrate on recovering from a serious knee injury.

Last season, the Marlpool Lane outfit had five captains as Turner was laid low with his problem, but Such’s appointment has ensured stability on the pitch.

“Stuart [Such] has made a big impact as captain,” commented Irish.

“He has made the team more cohesive with his presence on the pitch.

“I knew we had ability but what we lacked on the pitch last season was someone to look too when it was needed.

“We had five captains last season and that doesn’t help, now the players know who to turn to for leadership.”

KCs share the top spot with Spartans and Worcester Wanderers after continuing their 100 per cent record this season with a 30-23 win over Old Coventrians on Saturday.

Irish said: “I'm delighted with the start we've had to the season.

“We’ve had a few players out injured but the guys who have came in have known what to do and done very well for us.

“We have 30 or 40 people in training each week and that means that we have a job selecting who starts, instead of struggling to put a team together.

“I know that when we do have injury worries, we have guys waiting in the wings who can play at this level.”

Andy McLellan is set to return to the side for Saturday’s home league clash against Laurentians, but Sam Binnion, Craig Wilkinson and Nick Martin are set to miss the game because of injury or illness.
