JOINT manager Craig Payton believes that Bewdley Town FC's management and players must show some grit to overcome their inconsistent form.

Bewdley are currently mid-table in the West Midlands League Premier Division after a stop-start campaign so far.

The Ribbesford Meadows side suffered another setback in their bid to get their season back on track on Saturday when they were beaten 5-0 away at in-form Bloxwich.

Payton believes that Bewdley’s woes are down to a series of injuries and absences that have meant they have been unable to field a settled side.

“It’s ironic this season, we’ve got the biggest squad in our history but we’ve not been able to field a settled side,” commented Payton.

“We built our success on players appearing week-in-week-out last season but it’s not been the same this time.

“That’s just one of those things, some of the players have had to work on Saturdays because of the recession.

“We’re not used to struggling, so this is a test for the management and the players.

“It’s up to us all to roll up our sleeves and make sure we get back on track.”

On Saturday, Town were missing expectant fathers Gavin Smith and John Hardiman, the suspended Steve Holt, as well as Lewis Pountney and the injured Craig Forbes.

Bewdley were stunned by two early goals, while a third strike at the start of the second half ended their chances of a fight back.

Payton said: “We were missing the players we really needed for Bloxwich, we had to play too many skilful players.

“I’m not complaining, they did their best, but at grounds like Bloxwich you need your best battlers.

“All credit to Bloxwich though, they are the best side we have played so far and they will take some stopping.”

Bewdley, who played in Tividale in the league last night, entertain in-form Dudley Town on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

“Dudley play good football and I always think we are better against those kind of sides,” added Payton.

n Bewdley have arranged a coach for the FA Vase clash at Sleaford Town on Saturday, November 14.

The coach leaves Moat Street in Bewdley at 8.45am and is also picking up from the Co-op store in Franche at 9.15am.
