ROWING: A Young quartet from Bewdley Rowing Club set the pace at Evesham’s head of the river event at the weekend.

The coxless quartet of Tim Hopkins, Oli Bushnell, James Alexander and John Keen-Tomlinson covered the four kilometre upstream course on the River Avon in just 15 minutes and 50 seconds, setting a new course in the process.

A course record for an intermediate pair of 19.39 seconds was set by John Purcell and Richard Ray.

The newly formed double of Alex Smith and Ryan Porter beat off two crews from Dartmouth ARC to win in an impressive time of 18.46 seconds.

Where some crews floundered at the river’s notorious bends, cox Laura Ray steered a perfect course to help the Masters E four of Mik Edmonds, Phil Jackson, Jem Rogers and Hadyn Hughes achieve a winning time of 17.56.
