KIDDERMINSTER Harriers have been left fuming by York City’s announcement they have signed winger Matty Blair.

The Minstermen revealed yesterday the 21-year-old had agreed a two-year deal to move to Harriers’ Blue Square Bet Premier rivals.

However, as The Shuttle went to press, chairman Mark Serrell confirmed he had no communication with anyone from City.

Harriers are eligible to claim compensation for the wideman, who they offered an improved two-year deal, under the Bosman Ruling.

“I have no problem with Matty talking with other clubs but you would think that before York had announced his capture they would have spoken to us first,” commented an irate Serrell.

“We’ve offered him a good two-year deal and will be owed some compensation for him, so York need to talk to us.

“Also, it’s just common manners for someone from the club to pick up the phone and give me a call.”

Unless the two clubs can agree a fee, it will be decided by an FA tribunal.

Former Telford man Blair originally signed for Harriers on a non-contract basis last summer but earned a deal until the end of the season with some electric displays on the wing. He also broke into the England C squad while at Aggborough and scored 11 goals, including a stunning hat-trick at Grimsby.

Manager Steve Burr was keen to sign him up but after weeks of speculation, it looks as though his future will be decided very soon.

Serrell added: “Matty has done extremely well and we rate him very highly.

“He joined as an unknown but really shone through and I hoped he would get a chance to improve under the continued guidance of Steve.

“He’s scored 11 goals and was picked for England C while here, so he’s done very well.”

Meanwhile, it looks unlikely last season’s top scorer, Chris McPhee, will re-sign for Harriers. The Exeter-based 28-year-old, who scored 18-goals, is a free agent.

“Chris is a professional and he will let us know what he’s going to do,” said assistant boss Gary Whild.

“He can talk to anybody he wants to and perhaps he’ll be thinking about moving to a club closer to his home.”
