KIDDERMINSTER and Stourport AC remain on the promotion path in the Senior League after another good showing in Abingdon at the weekend.

The team are pushing for a second promotion in a row and top the table with two rounds of the season left.

Having won the first 2015 league contest competition of 2015 at home it was always going to be difficult to travel and compete well in this new higher division.

However, the team of 15 men and seven women rose to the occasion and finished an excellent second on the day, beating much bigger clubs from Tipton, Dudley, Banbury and Burton in the process.

The women’s section of the team had a real challenge with so few athletes.

But both Jill Turner-Smith and Sarah Stuart-Smith competed in the maximum seven events each to gain as many points as possible.

Ella Di Mambro, 15, who was competing in this league for the first time, also did her maximum four events as a junior competitor, including securing third place in the 400m with 71.2 seconds.

Selina Topham managed every running distance from 100m to 3,000m, competing in four races.

Kate Murdoch, who is carrying an injury and had only gone along to support the team, had to don her spikes to fill in where required.

Club stalwart Lynette McKeown, on the back of her three gold medals at the previous weekend’s Worcestershire County Championships, not only did her usual three throwing events but also a gutsy 100m sprint.

She also successfully competed in the prestigious Masters Midlands Championships on Sunday, winning the hammer with a new championship record as well as collecting golds in the shot put and discus.

She now aims to go one better by competing in the World Masters Championship in Leon this August.

Rising star Katie Lambert was too strong for the rest of the field, despite being up against older and more experienced opponents, as she broke the league record on her way to winning the women’s hammer with a massive throw of 49.58m.

The men’s section of the team, though having more athletes, still had to fight hard for all points gained throughout the day.

Adrian James, fresh from winning the 400m hurdles at the Worcestershire County Championship, finished a respectable fourth in a much tougher 400m hurdles in 68 seconds. Adrian went on to win his 110m hurdles and compete in both the high jump and 4x400m relay.

Dave Morris, the team manager took second place in the shot, while the versatile Matt Wilson not only did the same three throwing events but also got a second place in the 400m B race and anchored home the 4x400m relay team.

Alex Sparks and Brian Currier, competing in the event for the first time, tackled the gruelling 3000m steeplechase with Brian later joining John Amos for the 3000m flat race.

Tom Sparks, having not competed for 12 months, took on four events including a very well-deserved third place in a high quality triple jump competition with a distance of 11.55m.

Greg Forrester, 16, achieved a PB of 11.8 seconds in the 100m and also competed in the 200m and 4x100m relay.

One of the other juniors on the day, Chris Lane, also 16, in only his second competition at this level finished third in the long jump with a distance of 5.61m.
