ALTHOUGH burglary remains relatively low in West Mercia and less than one per cent of homes are burgled each year, the NWCSP is taking the opportunity to remind householders of the need to consider their home security, especially if they are planning to go away.

Welcome to June’s edition of Safe and Sound. This month I would like to draw your attention to doorstep crime. Doorstep traders can be genuine, but sometimes rogue traders turn up on your doorstep claiming they are on official business from the council, are there to read your gas or electricity meter or sometimes even from the water board, which doesn’t exist!

THIS month I’d like to tell you more about a one-year Home Office experiment called the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme which was rolled out in Greater Manchester, Wiltshire, Nottingham and Gwent last September.

WELCOME back to Safe and Sound, Wyre Forest Community Safety Partnership’s monthly column for August. Here at the partnership, we would like to remind Wyre Forest residents to remember to remove items from show in their cars when they leave them unattended.

WELCOME back to Safe and Sound, Wyre Forest Community Safety Partnership’s monthly column. End of term is here, school’s out and the holiday season is well and truly upon us. Improving weather and rising temperatures present criminals with warm weather opportunities. For example, if you are going walking near a beauty spot, don’t forget to lock your car and remove all valuables, including sat navs and the sucker marks that they make. Don’t forget to close the windows, including the sun roof!

WITH the current spate of very dry weather, the risk of grass fires is increased. Some fires are accidental. For instance, a cigarette thrown from a car window can easily ignite a dry grass verge and broken glass can concentrate the sun’s rays onto dry shrubbery, causing a fire. Sadly, most fires are started deliberately, but however they start, they can cause huge damage to property and kill wildlife. It also means our fire crews are unable to attend any other emergency calls while they are dealing with them. Grass fires are not only extremely dangerous, but the consequences are costly and disruptive for the whole community. People should be extra careful when visiting countryside and open spaces in Wyre Forest. If you see a grass fire, don’t attempt to put it out yourself as grass fires can travel very quickly and change direction without warning. Call the Fire and Rescue Service and tell them where the fire is.

THIS month I wanted to provide you with some highlights of the partnership’s activities over the last year. We have… n Continued helping to ensure that there are fewer victims of crime in Wyre Forest, with reductions achieved in both dwelling and non-dwelling burglary, criminal damage and drugs offences over the year 2010-2011 compared to the previous year.
12:08pm Tuesday 29th March 2011
AS the weather slowly improves, spring approaches after the long, cold winter and the Easter holidays are almost upon us, it’s natural for Wyre Forest residents to think about getting out into their gardens again.

I HOPE everyone is enjoying the half-term break and children are making good use of the Fab Feb activities funded by the partnership and put together by Wyre Forest District Council. The Community Safety team have been busy over the last couple of weeks getting out and about, promoting the partnership’s Home Security Scheme. This scheme is one part of the partnership’s strategy to reduce burglary even further and offers reassurance by offering advice and basic home security products, free of charge. The scheme supported Wolverley High School with the security of their 25 new bicycles, providing advice, locks and cycle marking kits. We hope that this initiative will also help to raise students’ awareness of bike security and encourage them to security mark their property and record it on the National Property Database at www.immobilise.com The scheme is constantly seeking new ways to engage with people in a bid to raise awareness and reduce crime. Members of the team, which included West Mercia Police, Hereford & Worcester Fire & Rescue Service and The Community Housing Group, took the police CCTV van to St Anne’s Primary School in Bewdley this month.

CHRISTMAS may have come and gone, but we are still in the festive season and it seems like a good opportunity to give local residents a few timely security reminders from the Community Safety Partnership.

AS Christmas is fast approaching and we will soon be into the usual round of Christmas parties and celebrations, I’d like to tell you about a local organisation that is working hard with the Community Safety Partnership, to help make Kidderminster town centre a safer, more attractive place to spend an evening and the ultimate party destination.

HAVE you experienced a hate incident, or do you know someone who has? If so, report it… April will see the re-launch of the Wyre Forest Hate Incident Partnership (WFHIP) to increase awareness and encourage reporting of hate incidents. It was originally started in February 2008, as a sub group of the Wyre Forest Community Safety Partnership and is a group of local organisations that work together to provide help and support to victims of hate incidents.

WELCOME back to our monthly column for August. The weather hasn’t been quite what we were hoping for, but it’s not over yet and there’s still a chance of an Indian summer! On the subject of summer, statistics show that this is a time when cycle crime increases, simply because more people use their bikes.
