The president Patsy Anderson opened the meeting on a sad note.

She reported the death of Cynthia Jones, a long-standing member.

She then welcomed several visitors and also the Shrinkin’ Violets from Astley WI.

Anne Freeston, the outings secretary, gave information about the new year lunch at the Waggon Wheel on January 20.

Diana Hackett, the secretary, spoke on the village hall appeal for new media equipment.

It was agreed to make a donation, possibly towards the screen.

Patsy outlined the various jobs of her new committee and the programme for 2014.

She reminded members to select the national resolution they wished to vote for by the January meeting.

Shirley Fieldhouse, from Astley WI, then introduced the Shrinkin’ Violets,.

The WI were entertained for the next hour.

The full company appeared in an amusing sketch set in “Kylie Klott’s” hairdressing salon, and written by cast member Julie Jeacock.

This went down well and created a happy atmosphere.

Their performance went on to include Slavonic and Spanish piano duets played by Shirley Fieldhouse and Jean Rudd.

There was also a humorous reading by Margaret Freeman on planning for old age.

There was also a choral speaking item featuring bell ringers, and two selections of songs sung by the whole company accompanied by Shirley.

The cast and the backstage crew received much appreciative applause at the end of their performance.

The happy atmosphere continued with an excellent Christmas buffet supper provided by the retiring committee.

The mulled wine that was served with the meal, was donated by Di Parkes as a celebration of her golden wedding.

The evening concluded with Christmas carols after which everyone went home in festive mood.

The next meeting will be on January 13 at 7.30pm in Areley Kings village hall.

This will be a ‘Call my bluff’ evening, with a team of three members pitching their wits against the rest.
