MP'S VIEWPOINT - January 8, 2009

9:25am Wednesday 7th January 2009

IT was good news on Christmas Eve to learn that a partnership of south Worcerstershire NHS GPs had won the contract to run the new GP-led health centre in Worcester.

AS usual Carol Services and Christmas concerts have followed the switching on of the Christmas lights in our three towns and on pubs and private houses.

NOW is an awful time for bad news and for people to be faced with unexpected redundancy just before Christmas is especially sad.

I AM writing this while waiting for the Queen’s Speech. The forecasts imply it is to be rather meagre and that several proposed Bills will be left out to allow time for more measures to address the financial crisis as and when necessary.

MP'S VIEWPOINT, November 27, 2008

IT is desperately disappointing to report that my representations to the Secretary of State responsible for awarding the Post Office Card Account to the Post Office who told me there was an appeal process for post office closures, to the Minister of State responsible for the Post Office and the Minister for the West Midlands have not led to movement on the post office closures.

TO my great relief the Government announced last Thursday that it had stopped the tendering process, demanded by Europe, for the renewal of the Post Office Card Account, and awarded the contract to the Post Office, thus probably saving from closure another 3,000 post offices.

LAST week on Wednesday I had a debate which clashed with a meeting of the Health Select Committee when Jamie Oliver was the witness about tackling the obesity problem.

MP'S VIEWPOINT - November 6, 2008

9:30am Wednesday 5th November 2008

FOLLOWING the PM’s promise to talk to me about appeals against the post office closure decisions at last week’s session of Prime Minister’s Questions, realising how busy he is and how long it would take to get an appointment with him, I spoke to his Parliamentary Private Secretary and put my questions in writing about the questionable fairness of the consultation being concluded after the merger of Postwatch into Consumer Focus and thus our loss of an effective peoples advocate to review the proposed closures.

MP'S VIEWPOINT - October 30, 2008

11:14am Wednesday 29th October 2008

I WROTE last week about my disappointment over the lack of debate about important amendments to Bills in the House of Commons when the timetabling for debates does not allow time for all amendments to be considered.

THE news that Wyre Forest District Council has £9 million reserves in Icelandic banks has been greeted with shock that a council can hold reserves of this scale and concerns about possible lack of care with the investment of our money.
